In like a lion!

March has been busy in Cara Benson writer world. It’s exciting and exhausting, and it isn’t even the cruelest month yet. That’s April, or so says T.S. Eliot, which I wrote about for Best American Poetry. (I am disappointed to discover they have recently deactivated their website.)

Anyway…as I lead up to the May publication of my memoir An Armsfull of Birds: A Personal Field Guide to Love, Loss, and Commitment, I have a handful of pieces appearing in the world. Two of them ran on St. Paddy’s day.

The Ask a Sober Oldster questions were so much fun to answer! This is part of the amazing Sari Botton editorial empire over on Substack. This particular series is a collaboration between Oldster and The Small Bow. If you want to see a picture of me as a five-year-old hooligan, check it out.

For Los Angeles Review of Books, I interviewed Fatima Bhutto about her memoir The Hour of the Wolf. We share an obsession with the human-animal relationship, so the conversation was quite rich.

And then there is a piece I wrote for Sierra Magazine’s Spring print issue about how climbing Mt. Rainier has taught me how to be a better climate activist. It’s not online yet, but I’ll post a photo below that gives a glimpse of it. I also have a short piece in Orion’s Spring issue, which isn’t out yet.

I’ve also been working on setting up bookstore events in conversation with other authors. From P&T Knitwear in NYC with Amy Shearn to Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge with Leah Hager Cohen, with others in Philly, DC, Burlington VT, Portland ME, and lots of other smaller cities in the northeast, I’ll be a busy bird this Spring and Summer. I’ll get those up in various places soon.

I almost forgot to mention that I’m leading some workshops for Grub Street and also one at my local food co-op (which I love). Those are listed at the Events + Workshops page, so check them out!

But before Winter officially ends, I want to see if I can squeak one last hike in the Adirondacks out this weekend. So I’m off to weatherproof my boots…
